Old Pueblo Endurance Ride Day 3, March 8, 2009 : Day 3 of the Old Pueblo Endurance Ride, superbly managed by Marilyn McCoy, her two daughters and a cadre of dedicated volunteers; fine vetting by Dr Sid and daughter Dr. Christy. Many remarked this was the best managed and best marked Old Pueblo ride ever. Both 50s and 25s are here as they passed through the Rosemont Junction area of the ride. Las Cienegas Pioneer Endurance Ride 2008 - Day 2 - 55-mile and LD : Held in the sweeping grasslands and rolling oak hills near Sonoita, Arizona Dec. 5, 6, & 7, Las Cienegas offered perfect riding weather this year. Christoph Schork finished first all three days. Ride Manager Marilyn McCoy, Head Vet Sid Zarges and their cadre of hard-working volunteers did their usual terrific job. 20% holiday and New Year's discount extended through Jan. 15.

Color Country Endurance Ride Day 2 : Color Country, a three-day ride held April 11,12 & 13 near the southern Utah town of Hurricane, lived up to its name, treating riders to trails surrounded by red mountains, snow-capped peaks, and abundant desert foliage. High winds on Day 1 calmed for the second and third days of this pioneer ride ably managed by Marian Parker and her family. Dave Nicholson was head vet. Old Pueblo Pioneer Endurance Ride Day 3 : The rolling grasslands of the sprawling Empire Ranch, framed by mountains, cottonwoods and mesquite trees, formed the perfect backdrop for the Old Pueblo Pioneer ride March 7, 8 & 9 near Sonoita, AZ in the AERC's Southwest region. Ride Manager Marilyn McCoy, Assistant Ride Manager Roger Taylor, Head Vet Sid Zarges and DVM daughter Kristi along with a group of vet students kept everything running smoothly. Six horse-rider teams finished all three days, with newly inducted Hall of Fame rider Bill Wilson and his horse Truly BoldnLively recording the fastest overall time. Earl Baxter and his Hall of Fame and "Perfect Ten" horse Catch Me if You Can were hot on their heels. A third Hall of Fame rider, Crockett Dumas, was third, followed by Sharon Dumas, Karl Phaler and Corrie Clinton.

Las Cienegas Pioneer Endurance Ride Dec.1,2,3 : For the first time, the Las Cienegas ride became an AERC Pioneer (3-day) ride as well as one of the first rides of the new ride season. Riders braved gusty winds and rain as they arrived in camp on Friday, through the night and on into Day 1. However, they were rewarded with sunny skies on Days 2 and 3. Five horse-and-rider teams completed all five days as Robert Ribley was First Overall on the Pioneer division. Ride Manager Marilyn McCoy will put on a second Pioneer ride -- Old Pueblo -- here in March.

Fort Schellbourne XP Day 5 Finish and Camp : The ride was beautiful -- we rode through snow-dusted mountains and passes on day 4 after Monday's high heat. On Day 3 the hardy souls who started endured sideways-blowing winds, white-out conditions in the high elevations -- and did I mention it was cold? We had to borrow extra blankets for the ponies at night. But they loved the sudden burst of winter in June, and it really settled the dust.

Fort Schellbourne XP Endurance Ride Day 2 : Day 2 riders came down off the mountain into the vet check where horses grazed on giant clumps of grass and riders enjoyed lunch. Dr. Gene Nance of Oregon did a fabulous job as head vet -- we hope he'll return to the XP fold soon!

Hog Wilder Day 2 : Tammy and Charlie Robinson and their daughter Charlene put on a three-day ride in the hills of Leona Valley that was a true endurance test of will and fortitude for horse and rider. The combination of heat (107 degrees in the shade on Friday) and climbs made this one of the toughest rides in Pacific Southwest memory. These photos are from Day 2. Most riders picked up their prints after the ride, but if you missed yours or would like reprints, enlargements or other goodies, this is the place to check them out.

Perle Tribute Gallery : Perle was an Arabian daughter of Myntyfa and Perchanceka (*Perkal x KY Kharousel), foaled 8 May 1996. Perle's mom, "PC", had many lovely foals, including two Welsh cross babies born at Farnley Farms. PC's daughter (Perle's half-sister) MHB Nepenthe (by *Imatok) was a successful endurance mare. Perle was featured in the EQUUS magazine series, "Perle's Progress," tracking her training and development into an endurance horse. She completed four rides this year before an unfortunate encounter with a rattlesnake ended her life just two weeks before her tenth birthday. The final story in the Perle series will appear in the July issue of EQUUS. Perle loved to nicker and "talk" to me; I miss her terribly. Her spirit will live in my heart forever.
